When you want what is best for someone you love - you are willing to let them go.  Letting go of somene will give them an opportunity to grow.  It may hurt to let someone go that you love, but it probably best for you too!
If you are speaking of children - they must grow up.
If you are speaking of a relationship - the person and you must mature.
We let go because of bad memories; the relationship is not going anywhere; we need to move on with our lives and let someone else in.
We might not understand it at first - but time will heal!
Lastly, if you (we) have hurt someone, letting them go may be the answer to a better life for all involved.

because if you love someone they are free and you must let them be free.  For me, true love is based on authenticity and freedom and if it is meant to be it will be....

One example may be loving someone that has a great opportuntiy to work in Europe (a goal they had prior to meeting you). Your ties are in the U.S.A.

You sense your mate would forgo their "once in a lifetime opportunity" if you asked them to stay. However you love them "enough" to realize (life is a personal journey) and therefore you don't want to keep them from touching their dream so you "let them go".

Loving someone enough to let them go simply means being "unselfish". As much as it pains you to let them go you realize they would be better off at this point in time to move on.

If you love someone Enough, it is always their well being before yours. If you can't let go; perhaps your love is still in the 'I want' zone. I remembered the hardest thing to do is letting go of my loved ones. I need them to know i am the one and no one else will love or understand them better. After a long while, it dawned on me..
It wasn't about me, anymore. It was about the person(s) that you love. What will complete him/her. What they want/need/best for them, not yours.
